歷史上出現(xiàn)過的洗衣機(jī)形式很多，但目前，一般最常見的洗衣機(jī)，主要分為三大類，而每類又可再細(xì)分為數(shù)種：

又稱“滾桶式”或“鼓式”，可再細(xì)分為“前揭式”及“頂揭式”，多為全自動(dòng)機(jī)種。前揭式：顧名思義，前揭式洗衣機(jī)機(jī)門是開在機(jī)身前面，而且多為透明，可以直接看到洗衣桶內(nèi)的情形。頂揭式：頂揭式洗衣機(jī)機(jī)門是開在機(jī)身上面，但鮮有透明機(jī)門的型號(hào)，但兩種機(jī)的洗衣原理一樣。另外，歐洲式還分為有干衣和無干衣功能的的形號(hào)，但基本上全部具脫水功能。

又稱“攪拌式”、“攪拌柱式”又或“攪拌棒式”，為歷史最久的一種電動(dòng)洗衣機(jī)，多為全自動(dòng)機(jī)，可再分為附有干衣機(jī)、和沒有干衣機(jī)的。所有近代的美式洗衣機(jī)都已經(jīng)有自動(dòng)脫水功能，不需要另外逐件衣物放到像兩支碾面粉的棒子疊在一起的電動(dòng)脫水器，把衣服碾干，另外，洗衣棒還可分為“單節(jié)式”和“雙節(jié)式”，洗衣效果各有不同，但雙節(jié)式的型號(hào)價(jià)錢通常比較高。
