歷史上出現(xiàn)過的洗衣機形式很多，但目前，一般最常見的洗衣機，主要分為三大類，而每類又可再細分為數(shù)種：

又稱“滾桶式”或“鼓式”，可再細分為“前揭式”及“頂揭式”，多為全自動機種。前揭式：顧名思義，前揭式洗衣機機門是開在機身前面，而且多為透明，可以直接看到洗衣桶內(nèi)的情形。頂揭式：頂揭式洗衣機機門是開在機身上面，但鮮有透明機門的型號，但兩種機的洗衣原理一樣。另外，歐洲式還分為有干衣和無干衣功能的的形號，但基本上全部具脫水功能。

又稱“攪拌式”、“攪拌柱式”又或“攪拌棒式”，為歷史最久的一種電動洗衣機，多為全自動機，可再分為附有干衣機、和沒有干衣機的。所有近代的美式洗衣機都已經(jīng)有自動脫水功能，不需要另外逐件衣物放到像兩支碾面粉的棒子疊在一起的電動脫水器，把衣服碾干，另外，洗衣棒還可分為“單節(jié)式”和“雙節(jié)式”，洗衣效果各有不同，但雙節(jié)式的型號價錢通常比較高。
